AYB Artists have been in the studio, at the movies, reading, giving artist’s talks, and rockin’ out! Plus we have exhibitions coming up and would love to see you at the receptions!
AYB Board Member Cecile Chong presented an artist talk in conjunction Object/Boundary at Dieu Donné located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, on Tuesday evening. Cecile’s paper pieces are stunning and reminded me of work Cecile was doing with embossed lace over 20 years ago when we first met! Like those pieces, the elegant patterned pieces have gorgeous color and bring to mind ideas of cultural history and home.
Cecile discusses her work in Object/Boundary at Dieu Donné.
Mich, Leni, Ed and Nicolette all made it to Joopi Live Concert at Arlene’s Grocery on 8/17/2024.
Ed writes: “ART YARD’s favorite band played their best show ever last Friday night at Arlene’s Grocery. Jules, singing some new original material, held the audience rapt with her captivating vocals. Her range was impressive, moving from angst filled, angry in-your-face outrage, to an upbeat, ethereal, lyrical sound. Liv’s precision base playing supported the high energy sound, complementing Tom’s steady drumming and some intricate lead guitar riffs by Kevin.
The Gen Z crowd embraced the show with raucous enthusiasm. The music spoke to their emotions and frustrations, providing joy and a temporary respite to life’s slings and arrows.”

Film & Book reviews
AYB Artist (and recent graduate from Film Program at the University of East London) Eden-Nicole Moore writes: “BAM did a festival called Cinema Restored this week - yesterday they showed a very poignant James Baldwin documentary called “I heard it through the Grapevine.” It took place in 1980 and it was him reflecting on how little has changed since 1957 regardless of things like monuments. He questions how future children will be educated on the civil rights movement and meets Chinua Achebe at the end.”
Speaking of gardening as art, I recommend Olivia Laing’s most recent book “The Garden Against Time”.
As usual, Laing casts a wide net on her subject. Meandering through time, place and well told anecdotes she reflects upon many a fascinating and sometime surprising gardener from Victorian Textile designer William Morris, to film maker & gay rights activist Derek Jarman. Enthusiastically describing her own gardening efforts reclaiming the garden in her home originally designed by landscape architect Mark Rumary.
AYB Artist Lila Green and I were just discussing Monday's Blue Moon. Lila explained that: "The job of the Blue Moon is to bring in abundance". So I shared a Blue Moon photo from Karla:
In the spirit of the topic of abundance -- integral to all AYB classes is a critique process that is key to developing self-expression, confidence, and public speaking skills. Participants actively engage in review, informed exchange, and thoughtful comments about the work of the day. Each critique ends with a round of compliments.
In a text conversation this morning Kansas-based AYB Artist and retired educator & arts administrator Karla Pricket writes:
“ART YARD BKLYN programs are not only one of the best models I have ever encountered, but the impact on creative lives is tremendous and life-changing. I have seen the growth in several of the younger artists that I have encountered, and I have only been a participant for the last three years. Personally, I have experienced something I didn’t know I was capable of. It really is mind-boggling quite frankly!”
