So excited to be dancin’ in September!

ART YARD BKLYN Advanced Studio resumes in person sessions Tuesday September 10th live in our studio at BWAC in Red Hook, Brooklyn from 6-8pm!

As we dance in the AYB Year of Literacy with a session Signs & Symbols taught by Jodie Lyn-Kee Chow we will look at Jean-Michel Basquiat's pictogram methods and Jenny Holzer’s anonymous text works in public space, both of whom use text to tell stories and create their own language which is both personal and political.

Other Art News

Abriel (bob), Catherine and I attended the opening of Art On Paper. It was a dizzying event teaming with spangled crowds teetering on fake fur shoes. We wound our way up and down the aisles looking at as much as we could absorb. With the AYB Year of Literacy on my mind, I was interested to find many text based pieces including Mel Bochner, Bla Bla Bla, some rather gothic looking (but to me illegible) text, and some great inspirational posters:

Then the pièce de résistance -- we found AYB Artist Iviva Olenick's fantastic embroidered books in the display organized by Booksmart, a project of the Center for Book Arts!

Abriel reports: "Art on Paper was a flashy affair filled to the brim with colorful paintings, collages, sculptures and drawings. The pieces that grabbed my attention the most were two works that weren’t on paper funny enough. The first work was  a paper mache sculpture of two dogs. One of the dogs was big and shaggy laying on the ground looking off into the distance. His eyes peaking out from long strands of paper fur. The other a small Chihuahua who had just gotten done taking a poo (paper mache poo included) I enjoyed the silliness of the work and felt as though it really captured the essence of dogs and their quirky personalities.

My other favorite work was a sculpture of the cartoon version of the Pink Panther. It was a very flat 2-d looking sculpture that in a photograph almost looked like a drawing that had been plucked off the paper and placed in space. The shape, movement and color of the piece provided a sense of whimsy and play that I always appreciate in artwork. I could really feel the attitude of the piece and found myself bonding with the sassy sculpture."

AYB Artist Sasha Jackson shares a new drawing in progress. It is a self-portrait with her daughter, using a photo taken by her husband as a reference!

AYB Artist Marilyn August wrote that she finished up the zine she created in Maraya’s Advanced Studio on Zoom zine class last spring. She also made a card for her friends and AYB supporters Lynne and Steven, who are expecting their first grandchild!

AYB Artist Jacob Rath shares: "I began teaching at a Montessori school this week. When setting up my classroom, I decided to add artwork I owned that was made by two ART YARD BKLYN teaching artists: Meridith McNeal and Marie Roberts. The day after I put Meridith's piece near the bead cabinet, I noticed that the painting and the bead chains have a similar makeup of colors."

Jacob's students are in for a treat -- what a beautiful classroom set up!

The Banned Books exhibition at The Valley Cottage Library is now on view! AYB Artists Evelyn Beliveau and Candy Heiland who have work on view attended the opening.

Candy shares: "I really enjoyed the exhibition and the event. There is a lot of good art on view and whole lot of people that I know showed up." We hear the trading cards look great and the library will be posting a video walk through of the exhibition soon!
